The K virtual machine and the Palm V, Part 1
At the recent JavaOne conference, Sun announced that the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) would contain as a key component the K virtual machine (KVM) developed by Sun Labs. Attendees of the conference had the opportunity to use a prerelease version of the KVM on Palm Computing handhelds (Palm V, Palm III, and Palm IIIx devices). Chuck bought one of the Palm Vs at the conference and unsuccessfully entered the JavaOne Palm V programming contest. This two-part series will give you an overview of what was in the demonstration version of this technology, and his experiences programming the device. (3,000 words)

JavaOne's Palm-sized winner
At the recent JavaOne conference in San Francisco, both Sun and 3Com so heavily promoted the new Palm V -- and the ability to develop applications for it using the KVM (the tiny-footprint, Java-based K Virtual Machine) -- that it would have been easy to dub the show the "PalmOne" conference. Find out why JavaOne attendees bought specially priced Palm Vs by the thousands -- and why many new Palm owners started programming for it immediately. (1,100 words)

The promise of the Java 2 Platform
At the recent JavaOne developer conference in San Francisco, Sun promoted its new Java 2 Platform so heavily that two entire conference tracks were devoted to it, and most of the technical sessions within them were jam-packed with attendees. The Java 2 Platform, whose beta and implementation releases are due in the third and fourth quarters of 1999, respectively, has a lot to offer developers and IT professionals working with enterprise, desktop, and microcomputing systems. Developers seem to be embracing Java 2; already, Sun has tracked three-quarters of a million downloads of Java 2 SDK in just six months. In this article, you'll find an overview of all three editions of the Java 2 Platform, along with reasons why J2EE has the potential to dramatically change the enterprise computing landscape.
