Java losing ground to Flex in RIA space

Here's a slew of items that ought to make anyone interested in the health of Java as a rich Internet application platform take pause. First off, Madison startup Sharendipity is running a series of blog posts about porting a Java-based application to Flex. After discussing why in many ways Java is a more appealing language to work in, the author gets to the heart of the matter:
Java's brand is failing. JavaFX has long been touted as the solution to Java's woes, but it has been too long in getting released. In the meantime, Flash has continued to dominate. Silverlight has come on as a competitor, but it will be years before it has the kind of market penetration that Flash has. The single biggest problem with Java right now is the name itself. If you see the Java applet loading, you click every visible link that you can to get off the page.
Meanwhile, JavaLobby has a a helpful article that will help Java developers jump ship to Adobe's RIA platform. If that's not bad enough for poor JavaFX, Frank Sommers over at Artima Developer feels that the still infant RIA language is stealing valuable development time from Swing. With that in mind, this blog entry from Danny Coward extolling the many RIA options for Java (many of which are not yet at 1.0 status) seems a little off-base.

One of the things that I mention in the original post is that Java's adoption rates are the real issue. The status of the Java brand is what is contributing to whether or not the market penetration can improve in the next few years.
I honestly hope it does because right now Flash is the only alternative if you don't want to alienate a very large percentage of your users. Flash is not the optimal solution but, as things stand right now, it's the best one.

Financial companies seem to be one of the few places on the web that still use Java applets a lot and from what I've seen a number of them are more than ready to move away from Java because of all the customer support problems. It's not just making sure that their customers have the Java VM installed but all sorts of problems having the correct version installed.
I don't know what the plan is to improve this issue with JavaFX, but I think it's going to be an uphill battle to convince a number companies who want to phase out Java on the client because of these problems.
Now that's from a client perspective, from a developers' perspective, even those interested seem to have an attitude to wait and see the technology prove itself. As no one wants to invest a lot of time into a technology that does not make it cars sale in the marketplace and many seem unsure of JavaFX's future.
