Dustin's Software Development Cogitations and Speculations

This blog is about my observations and thoughts related to software development. These observations include tips and tricks that I have learned, solutions to problems I have faced, and other concepts I have found interesting and useful. This blog is intended to provide information to help other developers facing the same issues as well as providing me a method to document things in a well-known location for my own future reference.

First Day at Colorado Software Summit 2008

Today (Wednesday, 22 October 2008) is actually the third day of presentations at Colorado Software Summit (Monday was the first day), but I have been too busy tweaking slides and examples for my own presentations and listening and learning at other presentations to take the time to write even a short summary blog on the Colorado Software Summit.

Looking Forward to the Colorado Software Summit

Several colleagues I work with have asked me about the Colorado Software Summit after hearing my enthusiasm regarding attending it (and presenting at it) next week. I realized that because they are not aware of these advantages of this conference, others probably are not aware either. This blog entry is my attempt at explaining some of the things that I believe makes Colorado Software Summit unique and exciting.

Identify Class Path Problems with -Xlint:Path

When I am working with developers new to Java, I often forget to tell them about the little tools that make Java development much more efficient. These are the types of tools that aren't necessarily used everyday, but are very valuable when the appropriate need arises. I remember to tell them about these tools when they run into a perplexing problem and I am helping them resolve the problem and use these tools almost without thinking about them.

The Java SE 6 Deque

I feel a little disappointment when I occasionally hear fellow Java developers make statements like this: "Java 6 doesn't really provide all that much." My experience with Java SE 6 has been very different and I find myself missing many of its features when I must use an earlier version of Java.

Similarities of Measuring Software Performance and Measuring Development Progress

I have observed that many lessons from software development experience can be applied to management of software development teams and that the opposite is also true -- many lessons from management of software development teams can be applied in hands-on software development. In this blog entry, I want to examine how lessons learned from software performance monitoring can be applied to appropriate monitoring of software development progress.

Standardization: The Dangerous Relationship for Open Source

There are many examples in software development of open source products introducing useful concepts and approaches that are later standardized. It is often the case that the creative developers behind the most successful open source products can deliver innovative features much quicker than a standards committee could ever hope to do. Standards are, by their nature, more difficult to create because they require consensus of so many different organizations and people with different agendas and ideas of what is best.
