Java RMI Collaborative TextArea

Hi, all

I am a beginner who is working on a project which requires 2 forms of communication audio and text. I have done the audio part using JMF RTP to stream audio via microphone BUT for text what I need is not a simply chat where a client sends a single line and a single line is recieved on the other side, BUT rather a distributed collaborative Text Area where all clients have an input.

THIS IS AN ASSIGNMENT BUT I AM NOT REQUESTING ANY CODE, but I do request help in understanding in laymans terms HOW to allow clients to share a Text Area, ALSO how on earth can you edit multiple lines of Text in java (i.e going backwards). I have seen examples online of a graphic whiteboard(use as assignment in colleges) What I need is similar but Text only which gives read and write permission to all clients. I HOPE I HAVE BEEN CLEAR ABOUT MY NEEDS AS FOR WHY I AM DOING THIS AS A BEGINNER ITS SIMPLY I WILL GET A BETTER GRADE.

Any help would much very much appreciated and links to websites or what to type into google regarding collaborative textArea in java(excluding collaborative TextArea in java).
