When high-tech history is inscribed for the ages, 2008 may be remembered as the year Java tipped from a language-centric to a platform-centric technology. In JavaWorld’s “Year in Review: Java in 2008 - What just happened?“, I had the pleasure of looking back over the last 12 months in Java development, when alternate languages for the JVM took center stage, new directions emerged in the enterprise space, and Sun Microsystems staked its claim on the client side — with or without Swing.
But examining the past without eyes for the future is rather bogue! Accordingly, while we won’t see a new Java SE platform release in 2009, it’s high time to stop your grumbling: the Java ecosystem is still evolving in interesting new directions. I once again had the pleasure of writing JavaWorld’s “Year in Review: Java development in 2009” which welcomes in the new year with a look at the forces most likely to shape change, challenge the status quo, and redefine Java technology in the year ahead.
Check out my review of 2008 and walk down memory lane then pick your head up and look to the future (or at least as far as 2009), baby!
