how to use 3rd party software in a java program

hi there,
I just wanna ask if is it possible to use 3rd party software in a java program? example, i have a scanner and a scanner software and I wanna use it in my program.
So, if i run my program and (let's say i have a button) click the button, it would launch the scanner application and i will be able to use the scanner. Isn't it like a link? thanks a lot for the help :D ...
