Call and run program in a JPanel

Is it possible to call software which would normally appear on the desktop - such as vlc, calculator etc.. - from a java program and run it inside a JPanel.
Presumably this would involve redirecting any output which would normally be sent to the desktop environment to the Jpanel + telling program displayed inside the JPanel that the screen has the dimensions of the Jpanel etc..
Does anyone know if this has been done or can be done?
I have been searching for info but have presumably been using the wrong search terms. If someone could point me in the right direction that would be very usefull.
