Use JMS for remote logging as it is atleast asynchronous...or use some tech which is async... I feel that RemoteAppenders may affect the performance of the system... It can be used for some techy requirements and may not fit for business and financial institution implementations.

You can use AsyncAppender, which would dispatch LoggingEvent to RemoteAppender. However I fully agree that jms is much better solution than raw sockets (my team is actually writing full logging system using log4j and jms)
