I hate the idea of moving backwards but sometimes client demand dictates diraction.
We have a product that we wrote in 1.4 hoping that by the time it came to market that 1.3 would have largely disappeared. Sadly we still had about 20% of clients demanding 1.3 so we had to "port". Our biggest problem was the fact that we made heavy use of RegExp, after several days of testing all the other versions available (non of which came close to compatability) we finally took the 1.4 source, made a few small mods and re-compiled it under 1.3, it actually worked perfectly. That's awesome to hear, John. This article was originally going to describe my process to do exactly what you did (port Java 1.4 regex to Java 1.3). I wanted, however, to make sure what I was documenting was legal, and my research showed it is not legal, so we decided to do an article with no legal implecations.
I would love it if you could send me your process.
