The good thing about unit tests is that over time they create a regression suite. With the regression suite it is safer to make new changes as you see if the changes break existing functionality. If you run unit tests contantly as a part of your continuous integration process (check Parabuild server), you can have a quick feedback on not only if you code compiles but if it works also.
