I don't know why ejb 3.0 would be adopted by companies with the success of lightweight frameworks such as Spring. What does it have to offer that doesn't already exist in proven open source java technologies. The biggest disadvantage I see with EJB is that it can not keep pace with the speed of open source technologies. The process of defining specifications needs to speed up to become a good alternative to all the quickly evolving open source solutions or they will always be playing catch up. My toolbox of high priced tools and app servers is quickly being replaced with their open source alternatives. The beauty of lightweight technologies is that if they ever do need to replaced/refactored it will be a lot easier than migrating ejb 2.x applications has been.

There are other things to consider when choosing a technology platform. For long-term strategic technology choices such things as standards, general avalability and multiple vendor support are important parameters. Not just what features are available just now.
