here is an example of an incremental build using maven 1.0 uptodate tag (similar to ant tag)

however this tag seems not to have been carried over to maven 2.0 .. the later maven2.0 code on that page is not incremental from what I can tell. probably the best current strategy is to call an ant script via the maven ant plugin.
I am personally very disappointed in maven 2.0 as [at time of writing] failing to make incremental builds a high priority in its design. esp critical with large prjs that maven is supposed to address.
