Don't forget that the third parameter to XMLHttpRequest.open() specifies if the call should be asynchronous.
If your functions need to occur sequentially it usually makes more sense to simply make the call synchronous instead of building a complex framework. Keep in mind that if you do make the call synchronous the browser may appear to hang while the server is accessed so your server side process should be quick.

Right. That is the issue I want to eliminate. The following blog also mentioned it, and you will find another frameworks, "Narrative Javascript" and "jwacs" as another approach:
