I find that Antmod helps with ensuring consistent tagging and branching, whether it is CVS or Subversion. Its build support makes it a complete package.

I'd like to mention the centralized overview of all projects that Antmod makes very easy. From one location (also version controlled) all project descriptors with versions are available and ensure proper grouping of code modules.
