SAN MATEO (09-21-95) - Netscape Communications Corp. will next week release a beta version of Netscape Navigator 2.0. Users will be able to download the World Wide Web browser for a free trial period from the company's home page at http://home.netscape.com.
Netscape's next-generation Web browser, which will run on Windows 95, Windows 3.1, Macintosh, and Unix systems, includes an improved Usenet news reading capability and Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions E-mail.
Netscape Navigator 2.0 also supports Live Objects, including plug-in media types such as Macromedia Inc. Director files, Adobe Systems Inc.'s Portable Document Format documents, and SunSoft Inc.'s Java applets, that can be viewed from within the browser.
The product also supports viewing of multiple, scrollable in-line frames.
