April 10 marks the day that NewMonics (Ames, IA) announced the development of PERC, a "clean-room" Java virtual machine for use in embedded real-time systems and consumer electronic devices. Based upon proprietary technologies, NewMonics will market PERC (short for Portable Executive for Reliable Control) products in stages over the course of this year.

According to Kelvin Nilsen, president of NewMonics, PERC distinguishes itself from Sun Microsystems' current Java implementations by providing support for accurate real-time garbage collection and by integrating the "Real-Time Java" extensions proposed by Nilsen himself in his recent research work at Iowa State University.
