Open Source Java Projects: The Wizard API
BEA Systems is blending open source and commercial developer tools in a release of its Workshop development tool for Java being announced on Tuesday.
BEA Workshop 10.1 combines the company's Workshop for WebLogic and Workshop Studio products. The product merges existing developer tools with Eclipse-based NitroX technology, which BEA acquired when it bought M7 in 2005.
"What our announcement means is that we become, in effect, the Burger King of Java development," said Bill Roth, vice president of the tools division at BEA. "The developer can have it their way, meaning the developer can choose the best framework for the job, whether it's our WebLogic application framework or whether it's an open source framework, and they can blend the two any way they want."
The product allows enterprise developers to access open source frameworks while open source developers can access commercial frameworks. Although the product is merged, it still will be segmented, with one version featuring BEA's WebLogic Server platform and one that does not.
Java Platform Enterprise Edition 5 tooling is featured in Workshop 10.1, to simplify application development. Object-relational mapping capabilities support Enterprise JavaBeans 3, Java Persistence API (JPA), BEA Kodo, OpenJPA, and Hibernate tools. AppXRay technology is featured, enabling developers to have a better understanding of the applications they are writing.
Development frameworks such as JavaServer Faces and Spring are supported.
BEA Workshop 10.1 will be available this summer.
