Sun announces new J2ME APIs and J2EE improvements

September 27 — At JavaOne Japan, Sun Microsystems introduced three new J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition) APIs: Mobile Information Device Profile 2.0, which delivers enhanced graphics and security; Mobile Media API, which provides new audio and video capabilities; and Wireless Messaging API, which improves instant messaging capabilities. Sun also previewed J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) 1.4, which includes Web services support integrated with servlets and EJBs (Enterprise JavaBeans), a new connector architecture, standard J2EE management, and deployment functionalities.

Ilog launches JConfigurator 2.0

September 27 — The newest version of Ilog's business rule management system combines optimization technology, enabling customer preference-driven configuration, with business rule management features, thereby giving business users control of the product and service configuration process. In addition to integrating with Java and Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE), JConfigurator 2.0 now supports Web services via Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP).

Sybase enhances PowerDesigner

September 27 — Sybase has released PowerDesigner 9.5, the latest release of its modeling and design tool that supports multiple modeling techniques within one environment. The tool supports nine UML (Unified Modeling Language) diagrams and is Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE)-compatible. Version 9.5 features new business process modeling capabilities and enhanced UML-based object modeling.

Air2Web increases its Java capabilities

September 27 — Air2Web Mobile Internet Platform 5.0 incorporates new features for global message delivery and mobile app development with Java and XHTML. The platform now supports the development of client-side applications for Palm, RIM (Research In Motion), and J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition).

Hit adds new features to JDBC middleware product

September 27 — Hit Software has announced that the new release of its JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) SQL middleware product supports distributed transactions and static SQL for DB2 databases running on z/OS, OS/390, and OS/400 platforms. Hit JDBC SQL middleware complies with the industry standard for Java applications.

TogetherSoft announces Mac and WebSphere support

September 27 — TogetherSoft's development environment, Together ControlCenter, will now feature support for Mac OS X. Also, later this fall, TogetherSoft will introduce Together WebSphere Studio Edition, which will integrate analysis, design, implementation, testing and deployment of enterprise applications into one platform. The tool will enable WebSphere Studio users to collaborate across modeling and code development disciplines.
